Born in Michigan and raised in Berlin, Tim Ra has been active in Berlin’s cultural scene for more than thirty years as both an artist and a journalist. He works across the media of image, film, and sound. His practice explores the dreamspace—that dimension of human experience in which consciousness loses its fixed boundaries: in dreams, psychedelic rituals, meditation, and the artistic process.
At the center of his visual work are image worlds, where mythological motifs, contemporary politics, and visions of the future intertwine. Alongside his visual practice, Ra composes music spanning jazz, hip hop, and contemporary electronic forms. His releases—often accompanied by music videos, several of which have recently been nominated at international festivals—are presented at Lovelab Dreamspace as immersive audiovisual experiences.
As an author and journalist writing under the name Robert Defcon, he contributed to publications including Spex and Electronic Beats, covering culture, technology, and contemporary artistic production. Together with Max Dax, he co-authored the definitive biography of Einstürzende Neubauten and published numerous oral histories.
In recent years, his artistic research and public work have focused on artificial intelligence in the arts and its aesthetic, philosophical, and ethical implications.
As the founder and curator of Lovelab Dreamspace, Tim Ra brings together artistic practice, journalism, and curatorial work in the form of an evolving salon—a laboratory where dreams are born.
